Camera ready format

Instructions for the preparation of manuscripts of works to be published in the journal
"Superficies y Vacío"
edited by the Sociedad Mexicana de Ciencia de Superficies y Vacío
(Mexican Surface Science and Vacuum Society)

Please, send a letter of presentation of your paper containing the full postal address of the author for correspondence, including phone, fax and e-mail.

It will be very helpful for us include the full postal address of at least three possible reviewers of your paper.

Submit manuscripts for revision as indicated below. After acceptance of the paper the authors must type it in the Camera Ready format that is indicated at the end of this document. If necessary, a fee of around $80 U.S. dollars per accepted paper could be charged to the authors. This could be necessary to finance the cost of publication of  Superficies y Vacío. One copy of the volume will be sent to the author by mail.

It is recommended to keep the length of articles between 3 to 5 printed pages in the camera ready format. This gives a word count between 2700 and 4500. Each figure and table takes a space similar to 250 words. 16 pages of double spaced text (including figures, tables, references, abstract, figure captions, etc.) will correspond to 4 camera ready printed pages.
Manuscripts should be typed throughout with double-line spacing and wide margins on numbered pages. Contributions are accepted on the understanding that the authors have obtained the necessary authority for publication. Submission of an article implies that no copyright will be infringed. Upon acceptance of an article, the authors will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher.

Languages. Contributions can be written in Spanish, Portuguese or English. If the article is not written in English it must include the abstract translated to this language. Send the electronic file of your contribution, one copy of the manuscript including figures, tables and references.

Title page. Papers should include a concise but informative title followed by the name(s) of the author(s) and by the name and address of the laboratory where work was carried out. The name and complete address of the person to whom proofs are to be sent must be given including e-mail, telephone and fax numbers. Acronyms are not allowed in the title.

Abstract. An abstract should be included , giving a brief and factual account of the contents and conclusions of the paper as well as an indication of any new information presented and its relevance. The abstract must be selfcontained, and reference to formulae, equations or references that appear in the text is not permissible. All papers shall include an abstract in English. The abstract is limited to around 100 words.

Keywords. Please supply at least three classification codes (PACS) and up to six keywords of your own choice that describe the content of your article in more detail.

References. The references are included at the end of the article, and numbered in the order of their appearance in the paper. Numerals are given in square brackets [ ]. In the list of references the names and initials of all authors must be included, and periodicals [1], books [2] and multi-authors books [3] should be cited in accordance with the following examples:

11 D. W. Tu and A. Kahn, J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A3, 922(1984).

[2] A. Roth, Vacuum Technology, 3rd ed. (North- Holland, Amsterdam, 1990).

[3] V. Celli, in: Dynamical Properties of Solids, Vol. 6, Eds. G.K. Horton and A.A. Maradudin (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1990) p. 337.

Each reference should be complete, thus the use of ibid., idem, et al., etc. is not permitted. References to unpublished or not readily accessible reports should be avoided.

Symbols, Formulae and Equations. Symbols, formulae and equations must be consistent with standard usage. Numerals referring to equations shall be enclosed in parentheses.

Tables. Tables are typed in double-line spacing on separate sheets and provided with a suitable heading and referred to in the text using Arabic numerals. Each table must include a title explaining the general meaning of the data.

Illustrations. Figures are numbered in the same order that they appear in the text and their captions listed together at the end of the manuscript. All figures must be clearly referred to in the text. Characters in illustrations must use fonts large enough to be legible after reduction in the camera ready manuscript. It is recommendable to verify this by reducing the figures to a width of 8.5 cm. Avoid pages containing only figures.

Preparation of figures

Line figures. Figures in the first version of the manuscript should be 1.5-3 times larger than the final size of the figures. Figures will be preferably reduced to a single column width (8.5 cm, in the camera ready format) unless their complexity, large width-to-height ratio or need to display special detail makes a larger format necessary. The font size used on a figure should be chosen so that after reduction, the height of numbers and (capital) letters falls within the range 1.2-2.4 mm.
Half-tone plates. Use half-tone plates only if strictly necessary. An extra charge can apply to those papers including them. The photographs should have a somewhat greater contrast than is desired in the printed figure.
Color plates.  Color illustrations are not acceptable.

Once the manuscript has been accepted for publication in Superficies y Vacío the author for correspondence will receive a notice, the letter of acceptance will be sent after the reception of the original camera ready manuscript along with its electronic file. The camera ready manuscript must be returned within 4 weeks after final acceptance. In case of major revision the manuscript must be returned to the Editor within a period of 6 weeks after reception of the comments of the referees.
The electronic file of the final camera ready format should be send in a 3.5" diskette or by e-mail. It will be posted in our website ( It is essential that the name and version of the word processing program, type of computer on which the text was prepared, and format of the text files are clearly indicated.
The format of the camera ready paper is very similar to that of articles in the Physical Review journal. Use single space. The main differences or important details are explained below:

PAGE SIZE: Letter size, 21.59 cm wide, 27.94 cm length (8.5 inches by 11.5 inches).

FONT: Use Times Roman or the closest font for ALL the text.

TITLE: Must be written in 13 points, bold, centered. Use uppercase for the first word of the title and whenever is required. Leave a blank space after the title. Use 2cm left and right margins.

NAMES AND AFFILIATIONS: Use 10 point characters, centered. Affiliations in italics. Leave on blank space between co-authors of different institutions.

ABSTRACT: Leave two spaces before the abstract. Use 9 point characters. Paragraph must be justified and indented 3 cm on both sides with respect to the size of the whole page (3 cm margin on both sides).

TEXT: Use 10 points characters. Two columns per page. Each column must be 8.5 cm wide and 24 cm height, that is, you should leave top and bottom margins of 1.97 cm. Columns must be separated by 0.7 cm. Symbols and equations must be written using mathematics style, not text style (for example variables in italics, vectors in bold, etc. ).

FIGURES: Labels and scale numbers must be at least 1.5 mm high in the camera ready version. Figures must appear at the top of bottom of the page as close as possible to the text that makes reference to them. Use 8 point characters for  figure captions.

TABLES: Use 10 points font for text. Use 8 point font for table captions.

REFERENCES: Two columns. Use 9 point characters. Use bold characters for the volume of the reference.

GENERAL: Only if necessary  you could use a two column width for equations, tables or figures. It is strongly recommended to look carefully to the format of the Physical Review, this will help you to type your paper.
